
Google Pays $250 Million for XR Technology and Team Transfer
(Taipei, 23rd) HTC, the Taiwanese technology company, has announced a new agreement with Google, under which a portion of its XR development team will be transferred to Google. In return, Google will pay $250 million (approximately 11.11 million ringgit) for non-exclusive rights to HTC’s XR intellectual property. This transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year.
HTC Focuses on VIVE Brand and Streamlining Business
Following the agreement, HTC stated that it will refocus its efforts on the development of the VIVE brand and work towards streamlining its product portfolio. The company aims to improve operational efficiency while optimizing its financial strategies for long-term growth and to ensure greater flexibility in adapting to future market and technological changes.
Commitment to XR Ecosystem and Emerging Technologies
Despite the asset transfer, HTC will continue investing in the development of XR technologies, particularly through the VIVE XR solutions. The company is also increasing its focus on AI and metaverse innovations, aiming to open up new growth opportunities within these sectors as part of its long-term vision.
Google to Accelerate XR Ecosystem with Android Platform
This agreement also aligns with Google’s ongoing efforts to accelerate the Android XR platform and boost the development of the XR headset and eyewear ecosystem. The transfer of HTC’s highly skilled technical team further strengthens Google’s investment in establishing an innovation and technology base in Taiwan.
New XR Devices to Launch Soon: A Big Push for the Industry
In addition to this deal, Google, along with Qualcomm and Samsung, has been working on the development of the Android XR platform. A new headset is expected to be released later this year, which will significantly contribute to the growth of the XR industry and expand the possibilities for consumers in virtual reality experiences.
